So what is N.O.I.S.E. anyways...?
Fair question.
Think of N.O.I.S.E. as a tool. A tool that will make it easier for people who want to make music at Laurier to collaborate with each other.
Connected to this website is an instagram group chat. This is where the activity is. The idea is very simple: if you ever find yourself wanting to create some music with other people you can send a message to the chat to see if anybody else in the group would be interested.
For example, you might have a free hour between classes and send a message asking if anybody wants to hang out and help you revise some of the chord changes to a song you're writing. Or maybe it's a more planned out gathering and you ask if there are any string players who would be around on Friday to try out some fingerings for a quartet you're writing. Or you want to work on programing bangin' drums in a DAW, or some crazy mixing tricks, or you want to improvise with someone for a little bit, or maybe, though your gathering will feature sound, you'll feel no need to provide labels at all. There's no style restrictions at all. You don't have to be someone who thinks of themselves as a "composer," either. Even if you've never written music in your life, if you think that it might be cool to work with people and figure out ways to make new music together that's more then enough. I belive in the power of GATHERING, and my hope with this group is that it can help facilitate musical gatherings across the school community. (If you want to be a part of the group but don't have or want instagram you can message me at owenbrackley@gmail.com and we can figure something out).
N.O.I.S.E. is open to anybody who might be interested in CREATING or HELPING TO CREATE new sounds. There are no set meetings - just those that you create and become a part of. Think of it, again, as a tool giving you ACCESS instead of OBLIGATIONS. Access to all the interesting people and all their interesting ideas that populate this program without a single obligation to do anything about it (though I hope you'll want to do something about it!). It's not a closed group either - bring whoever else you want along to these musical gatherings.
There are many great forums and resources online for composers to learn about their relationship to music and their craft, but you can't sit down face to face with any of those forum people and create. Since we're all hanging together in the same place right now I thought it would be great to have a really easy and casual way to work with each other.
